Opening a new Library Branch is a big challenge, but it is also an exciting time for the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library. While libraries still have books for people to check out and read, they also provide a lot of other services for people in the community, including free Wi-Fi, computer and print services, programming for people of all ages, and diverse cultural and leisure experiences. In order for us to provide all these services and more, we are hoping to raise $100,000 to help cover the opening day expenses of our new branch.

Donating
There are lots of different ways you can help us reach our goal. You can make a donation to our fundraising campaign in person at any library location, cheques can be made out to the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library and mailed to the library (Click here for mailing address), or you can donate online through our PayPal account. We also have a sponsorship package for those that are looking to make larger donations. Please see our sponsorship package and donation brochure below for more details.

Libraries as Community Hubs

Libraries are recognized as community hubs. They provide critical infrastructure for building individual, organizational and community capacity through their holistic nature, e.g., diverse collections, programming, and services.

Their physical locations serve as gathering places for people of all ages to engage in lifelong learning, experience and explore new dimensions, meet other people, and renew old friendships.

Libraries are places that spark change, increase understanding, and strengthen resolve. Interaction with others, in-person or via technology, fosters networks that support information gathering to better inform peoples’ decision-making process. They provide a ‘level playing field’ by providing access to resources, and encouraging integration of all social strata in resource access.

Archives
The Archives at the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library were created in the early 1990's to preserve materials and documents about the history of Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma Region as far back as 1822. Collections in the Archives include Algoma Steel, Algoma Central Railway, and the Abitibi Pulp and Paper. We also have collections about influential local people including Francis Clergue, Dr. Roberta Bondar, and Col. Sydney Penhorwood to name a few. At our new branch we will be able to grow the Archives and properly preserve the records and materials that document our community's history.
