Public Notice: Asbestos Work at the Library
Posted: Mar 02, 2022

Areas of the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library have been closed due to an ongoing maintenance issue making some library materials temporarily inaccessible.

The James L. McIntyre Centennial Library is a Centennial building, built in 1966. Much like other older buildings built at that time, materials containing asbestos were used in its construction. The hazards of asbestos were not known until many years later. For more than 10 years, the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library has undergone annual asbestos inspections to ensure the health and safety of the public and staff.

Recently, particles from the lower ceilings in parts of the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library were discovered on upper shelves. A test was conducted which indicated that chrysotile asbestos fibers were present. The Library had some remedial work completed and the shelves HEPA vacuumed. Since then, additional particles have been discovered indicating that this is an ongoing problem which requires a more lasting solution. The lower ceilings will now need to be encapsulated or undergo asbestos abatement.

Tulloch Engineering conducted several air quality tests which indicated that there were <0.001 fibres/cubic centimeter, well below 0.01 fibres/cubic centimeter standard in O.Reg 278/05. This indicates that it is safe to be in the Library.

The James L. McIntyre Centennial Library remains open though some areas remain inaccessible to public and staff. Once final plans are in place for either encapsulation or abatement, this location will temporarily close for the duration of the remediation project. A media release will be provided to media outlets and the public detailing the closure at some future date.

We are sorry for any inconvenience and are working expediently to resolve this issue. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
